U.S. Soldier Killed In Convoy Attack in Baghdad

WASHINGTON, Oct. 27, 2004 -- A 13th Corps Support Command soldier was killed and another injured after a suspected motorcycle-bomb attack on their convoy, military officials in Iraq reported today.
The death is the third suffered by the Fort Hood, Texas-based unit this month.
The attack, which happened near Sindiayah around 9:30 a.m., is under investigation.
The name of the soldier killed is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification. The injured soldier was taken to the Air Force Theater Hospital at Logistics Support Area Anaconda in Balad.
Meanwhile, 1st Infantry Division soldiers cordoned off an area near Khalis after insurgents detonated an improvised explosive device at about 8:24 a.m. today.
After the explosion, the soldiers found more unexploded ordnance in the area. Officials reported no injuries or equipment damage.
Elsewhere, an individual was detained for firing on an Iraqi National Guard checkpoint near Riyadh at about 9:50 p.m. Oct. 26.
The individual was apprehended in a vehicle located in a nearby field. Military officials said a search of the vehicle revealed an AK-47 assault rifle that been recently fired.
