Building Capacity to Improve Health

Division of International Health

Through collaboration with our partners, the Division of International Health (DIH) provides ministries with the means to build their own capacity to improve public health. We provide training and capacity building to assess disease surveillance and improve intervention programs by helping to conduct training programs for health professionals.

Our Vision: Effective health systems that support the well-being of communities around the world.

Our Mission: Work with partners to strengthen capacity of countries around the world to improve public health.

During the last 24 years, we have worked with international partners to build 28 long-term applied public health training programs in their countries.

  • Twenty-six of these programs have had a CDC resident advisor for one year or more.
  • Twenty programs (77%) no longer need external technical assistance and their grants closed out. Of these, eighteen (90%) continue to produce graduates, while only two (10%) were not sustained.
  • To date, the mean age of sustained programs is 12 years.
  • Seven programs (27%) were started after 1998 and are still in development.
  • As of 2003, more than 1500 persons have graduated from DIH-related programs and 289 are currently in training.
  • More than 95% of graduates are still working in public health creating and implementing surveillance and intervention programs.
  • Resident advisors are currently in Brazil, Kazakhstan, Jordan, China, India and Kenya.
