GeneRIF provides a simple mechanism to allow scientists to add to the functional annotation of genes described in Entrez Gene. To be processed, a valid GeneID must exist for the gene, or the Gene staff has to have assigned an overall GeneID to the species. The latter case is implemented via records in Gene with the symbol NEWENTRY. Once the GeneID is identified, only three types of information are required to complete a submission.
- a concise phrase describing a function or functions (less than 255 characters in length, preferably more than a restatement of the title of the paper)
- a published paper describing that function, implemented by supplying the PubMed identifier (PMID) of a citation in PubMed
- a valid email address (which will remain confidential).
Access to the submission form is provided from the Bibliography section of an Entrez Gene default report view, so you don't have to retype the GeneID or other identifiers (details below).
To suggest CORRECTIONS or UPDATES for GeneRIFs, Reference Sequences, or LocusLink/Gene records, please use the separate update form.
Sample GeneRIFs are provided here.
The steps to submit a GeneRIF include:
- Query PubMed to identify the PMID for the reference.
- Query Entrez Gene to find the record for the gene.
- Display a single Entrez Gene report page by clicking on the GeneID at the left on the result page.
- Click on Submit GeneRIF in the grey Bibliography bar.
- Enter the PubMed id in the correct box.
- Add your description of the function of the gene or its protein product.
- Enter your email address.
- Press the Validate button to validate your entry. The PMID value you entered will be verified and the author, title, and citation will be displayed for review.
- When all is correct, press Submit to store the GeneRIF.
Each submission is acknowledged using the email address that was entered. The text of the GeneRIF is reviewed for inappropriate content and typographical errors, but is not otherwise edited.
GeneRIF summaries are included as soon as possible in the GeneRIF subsection of the Bibliography section of a Gene report page. They also are reported in RefSeqs valid for the Gene.
NOTE:
The majority of GeneRIFs available from Entrez Gene
is provided by the National Library of Medicine's MeSH indexing
staff, who have advanced degrees in the life sciences.
In addition to the MeSH indexing, they also create GeneRIFs
for genes in Entrez Gene. The intent is to store papers and
comments that contribute functional information.
