Newborn Drug Development Initiative Workshop
March 29-30, 2004
Baltimore, Maryland

The NICHD, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), and the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) are sponsoring a two-day conference, March 25-26, 2004, on Carnitine-a conditionally essential nutrient, supplied via food intake and endogenous synthesis in the liver, brain, and kidney that facilitates the transport of fatty acids to the mitochondria for oxidation, a process crucial for the high-energy demands of cardiac or skeletal muscles and the brain. Carnitine is widely offered for cardiovascular health, weight management, and sports performance. For more information, visit
