News Release - September 21, 2004
Texas Businesses Lead Green Power Market

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that Texas leads the nation in the number of EPA Green Power Partners - businesses that have purchased enough environmentally beneficial renewable energy, also known as "green power," to qualify for EPA recognition.  Texas has almost 200 Green Power Partners, far more than any other state and about 40 percent of all partners in the program.  Texas participants in the EPA program include 168 companies, 6 government entities, 4 educational institutions, and 18 non-governmental organizations.  Texas also has the nation's leading utility green pricing program in terms of annual sales, Austin Energy.

"With almost 200 EPA Green Power Partners, Texas is leading the way in development of the national green power market.  Our Texas Partners are purchasing over 400,000,000 kilowatt hours of green power annually - roughly equal to the power needed for 40,000 homes each year," EPA Regional Administrator Richard Greene said.  "In emissions reduction benefits, this is roughly equal to taking 50,000 cars off the road.  To all our Green Power Partners in Texas - thank you."

Texas, which is second only to California in wind generating capacity, has seen an enormous increase in installed wind generating capacity in recent years, in part because of demand created by Texas businesses purchasing green power.

Texas Green Power Partners were honored at a recognition luncheon held at the Austin Convention Center to spotlight leading Texas green power purchasers.  The luncheon featured remarks by EPA Senior Policy Advisor for Energy Rob Lawrence, Austin Mayor Will Wynn and Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson.  A video salute to leading Texas green power purchasers was also presented.

Green power is electricity generated from renewable energy sources with low environmental impacts, including wind, solar electric, geothermal, eligible biomass, and eligible hydro resources.  EPA promotes renewable energy nationally through its Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program in which Partners pledge to switch to green power for a designated portion of their electricity needs.  In return, EPA provides technical assistance and public recognition.  Nationwide, the program has almost 500 partners - including Fortune 500 companies, states, federal agencies, trade associations and universities.

More information about the Green Power Partnership is available at http://www.epa.gov/greenpower/.
