Products
The Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Wakefield issues
zone forecasts for 66 jurisdictions in the county warning
area. Zone forecasts describe expected temperatures,
winds and chances for precipitation during the next
48 hours. Zone forecasts also include a generalized
forecast for the 3-5 day period. The forecasts are issued
routinely 4 times a day, by 5 A.M./P.M. and 11 A.M./P.M.

Short Term Forecasts
The Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Wakefield issues
a short term forecast for 66 jurisdictions in the county
warning area on an event-driven basis. By "event-driven",
we mean that STF's will only be issued and/or updated
during periods of inclement weather. Examples include,
but are certainly not limited to, thunderstorms, hurricanes,
adverse marine weather conditions, strong winds, and
temperature extremes. PLEASE
keep this in mind when viewing the Short Term Forecast
and remember that during periods of benign weather conditions,
the forecast you are reading may be old. The short term
forecast is carried on the Weather Channel. However
at this time only cable television companies in the
Norfolk and Richmond metro areas carry the weather.

The Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Wakefield
issues an area forecast discussion (AFD) which describes
expected short term conditions within the county warning
area. The AFD is generally divided into three sections
with a brief description of each...
An analysis section....which
describes the most recent trends in surface and upper
air data as well as radar and satellite imagery.
A discussion section...which
describes key features to affect the county warning
area and assesses numerical model trends associated
with these features through 48 hours.
A warnings section...which
lists counties and marine areas under advisories, watches
or warnings.

Marine Products
The Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Wakefield issues
marine forecast products for the lower Chesapeake Bay
and the Atlantic coastal waters from Fenwick Island,
Delaware to Currituck Beach Light, North Carolina. Real-time
marine forecasts can be found in the Marine & Tides
section of the homepage. In addition we issue short
term marine warnings for the Chesapeake Bay and the
Atlantic Coast in the form of Special Marine Warnings
and Marine Weather Statements. We also issue Coastal
Flood Watches, Warnings and Statements during times
of above normal tides.
Hydrologic
Products
The Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Wakefield also
has hydrologic service area (HSA) responsibilities.
Our HSA covers two river basins, the James River basin
and the Chowan River basin. We have 9 forecast points
on the James River basin and 5 forecast points on the
Chowan River basin for a total of 14 forecast points
within the HSA. The service hydrologist at WFO Wakefield
will frequently coordinate with the hydrologic forecasters
at the Middle Atlantic and Southeast River Forecast

The Weather Forecast Office (WFO) in Wakefield broadcasts
routine weather information and short fused warnings
on NOAA Weather Radio. We currently broadcast on 5 transmitters.....Norfolk,
Richmond, Heathsville, Salisbury, and Margarettsville.
We will periodically conduct NOAA Weather Radio surveys
for our users who live in the Eastern Virginia....the
lower Maryland eastern shore and Northeastern North
