Health
services and supplies expenditures These
are outlays for goods and services relating directly to patient care plus
expenses for administering health insurance programs and government public
health activities. This category is equivalent to total national health
expenditures minus expenditures for research and construction. National
health expenditures
This measure estimates the amount spent for all health services and
supplies and health-related research and construction activities consumed
in the United States during the calendar year. Detailed estimates are
available by source of expenditures (for example, out-of-pocket payments,
private health insurance, and government programs), and by type of
expenditures (for example, hospital care, physician services, and drugs),
and are in current dollars for the year of report. Data are compiled from
a variety of sources. Nursing
home expenditures
These cover care rendered in establishments primarily engaged in providing
inpatient nursing and rehabilitative services and continuous personal care
services to persons requiring nursing care (skilled nursing and
intermediate care facilities, including those for the mentally retarded)
and continuing care retirement communities with on-site nursing care
facilities. The costs of long-term care provided by hospitals are
excluded. Personal
health care expenditures
These are outlays for goods and services relating directly to patient
care. The expenditures in this category are total national health
expenditures minus expenditures for research and construction, expenses
for administering health insurance programs, and government public health
activities. Private
expenditures
These are outlays for services provided or paid for by nongovernmental
sources--consumers, insurance companies, private industry, philanthropic,
and other non-patient care sources. Public
expenditures
These are outlays for services provided or paid for by Federal, State, and
local government agencies or expenditures required by governmental mandate
(such as workmen's compensation insurance payments).
