TN Training Grants
Team Nutrition (TN) Training Grants for Healthy School Meals have been identified in USDA's National Strategic Plan for Training and Technical Assistance as one of the anchor delivery systems for supporting the implementation of USDA's nutrition requirements and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans in school meals. TN Training Grants offer funding to State agencies to establish or enhance sustainable infrastructures for implementing TN.
From 1995 through 2004, the efforts by State agencies receiving TN Training Grants have resulted in:
|
Many Child Nutrition Program foodservice personnel receiving training and technical assistance to enable them to prepare and serve nutritious meals that appeal to students. |
|
The use of many USDA developed TN materials to assist foodservice staff in serving nutritious meals that meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. |
|
Focusing on the 5 a Day program to improve students' fruit and vegetable consumption. |
|
Creating a healthy school environment using the USDA's resource, Changing the Scene: Improving the School Nutrition Environment: A Guide to Local Action. |
|
Collaborating with other State agencies and organizations to achieve the Team Nutrition goal and to address child nutrition/health issues, such as obesity and physical inactivity. |
|
Many mini grants to local school districts to assist their efforts to promote healthy eating and physical activity. |
|
Efforts to integrate nutrition education into students learning content standards, including trainings and workshops provided to teachers. |
|
Many childcare children and school age students enjoying healthier school/childcare meals and students and their parents/caregivers are exposed to good nutrition information. |

* Demonstraton Project |
TN Demonstration Projects
For Fiscal Year 1999, Public Law 105-277 authorized $4 million for school food service training grants to State agencies that administer the National School Lunch Program. The $4 million was divided between two separate projects – the traditional TN Training Grants and a new initiative entitled TN Demonstration Projects.
The TN Demonstration Projects will be high visibility projects that provide States the opportunity to enter into a cooperative agreement with FNS to help develop models of firmly established TN initiatives that appeal to and assist States across the country. Participating State agencies will implement TN initiatives that provide positive nutrition messages through the six TN communication channels:
classroom activities
food service initiatives
school-wide events
home activities
community events
media events and coverage
Further, State agencies will implement TN initiatives by incorporating the TN instructional materials developed in cooperation with Scholastic, Inc. As part of the Demonstration Projects, participating States will be partners in the development of a TN technical assistance guide intended to assist other States in TN implementation. States will also be given the opportunity to influence decisions on what data are useful and reasonable to collect through a pilot TN routine-reporting system, and how often that data should be collected.
For the TN Demonstration Projects, USDA received four applications of which all were selected for funding. The TN Demonstration Projects were funded for the period August 31, 1999 through August 20, 2002.
