National Programs Crop Protection & Quarantine
ARS National Program Economic losses of food and fiber due to damage caused by insect, mite, and weed pests costs U.S. consumers and producers over $122 billion each year. In addition to direct losses caused by insects, mites, and weeds, pests may further reduce the quality and value of products, increase the costs of production, damage environmental areas and place native species at risk, or restrict U.S. products from access to valuable foreign markets. Information obtained and technologies developed through this National Program will form the basis for integrated pest management (IPM) and areawide suppression programs that support agricultural production systems while protecting natural ecosystems. The overall philosophy of the program is to develop and implement ecologically-based, sustainable approaches to the management of native and invasive insect, mite, and weed pests through a combination of biological, cultural, physical and chemical methodologies that reduce pest populations to economically or environmentally acceptable levels while minimizing impacts on human health, and the environment.
