American - Yemeni Agricultural Cooperation Workshop

U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Thomas Krajeski, and Minister of Agriculture, H.E. Hassan Omar Suwaid, officially opened the American – Yemeni Agricultural Cooperation Workshop at the Mercure Hotel on October 3, 2004.

In his opening remarks the Minister expressed his deep appreciation to be cooperating with the American government in agriculture in raising living standards in the Governorates Saadeh, Amran, Marib, El Jawf, Shabwa and selected areas of the Tahama Region, restructuring the Ministry and making more effective use of the Cooperative Agricultural Credit Bank to extend rural finance to the needy.

The Ambassador emphasized the importance of agriculture and the important role of livestock management as key elements of the rural development program in Yemen that is funded under the auspices of the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The workshop was attended by over a dozen branches of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, the Public Works Project, Agricultural Cooperative Union, University Faculties of Agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, New Mexico State University, Associates in Rural Development Inc., and USAID representatives.
