I am delighted to be in Yemen. I am grateful for the warm welcome I have received from the Embassy staff, both American and Yemeni, the Yemeni government, foreign and international missions, and most of all, from the Yemeni people.
My first task is to continue the impressive work of my predecessor, Ambassador Hull and his team. In partnership with the Yemeni government, we have made great progress in the fight against international terrorism, and we must continue to relentlessly pursue terrorists wherever they try to hide. At the same time, victory over terrorism requires our intense efforts to develop the economic, educational and health sectors in Yemen and to support Yemen’s plans to promote the democratic process, and protect human rights and individual freedoms, including the freedom of expression. In turn, increasingly improved security, a strong, stable democracy, and significant progress in health and education will all contribute to the creation of a more attractive investment environment in which American, international, and Yemeni investors can discover economic opportunities for the people of Yemen. Creating jobs in Yemen is the best defense and our strongest weapon against extremism and terror.
I look forward to traveling throughout this beautiful country, meeting Yemenis from every community, and learning more about the history and culture of Yemen, and especially how Yemenis and Americans can work together to achieve our mutual goals of security, freedom and prosperity.
