Links to other USGS Programs

Most scientists funded by the Hydrologic Research and Development (HRD) program are also funded in part by other USGS programs. This linkage ensures research efforts that are not only focused on developing new concepts and techniques, but that also remain relevant to current USGS programs and DOI management responsibilities. The USGS Programs that currently provide substantial funding to scientists in the National Research Program (NRP) are listed below, along with a brief description of that support.

Toxic Substances Hydrology	Supports long-term research field sites and interdisciplinary research needed to develop the scientific information and tools needed to explain the occurrence, behavior and effects of toxic substances in the Nation's waters.
National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA)	Supports research needed to adequately assess the Nation's water quality, including research that is aimed at understanding the effects from both natural and human factors on water resources.
Ground-Water Resources	Provides funding that supports research and development of new analytical techniques and tools with which to solve practical problems in the study of ground-water resources.
Hydrologic Networks and Analysis Hydroclimatology Watershed Modeling	Supports studies looking at the impact of climate variability on the Nation's hydrologic systems and the development of a computer modeling system to look at water resources on a watershed scale.
National Streamflow Information	Supports research to improve the accuracy of streamflow data, the efficiency of its collection, and the development of methods to predict hydrologic extremes (floods and droughts).
Volcano Hazards	Supports investigations and the model development focused on the interrelationship between volcanic and hydrologic processes, including studies of the geochemistry of waters and gases discharging in volcanic areas.
Earth Surface Dynamics Carbon Cycle Research	Provides funding for studies looking at global and regional carbon budgets, in particular the sequestration and storage of carbon in terrestrial sediments and the flux of C gases between the surface waters and the atmosphere.

Most NRP investigations are done in collaboration with scientists from other institutions; the results are widely disseminated to scientists in academia and Federal and State agencies, as well as to water resource managers and to the general public.
