Project:

Jordan Groundwater Management

Leaders:

William C. Steinkampf, bs@usgs.gov
Anna Lenox, alenox@usgs.gov

Overview:

The Groundwater Management project is scheduled to begin in April 2004. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) will select a senior hydrologist/team leader. The team leader, who will work in the Jordanian Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWI) for 2-3 years, will select a local staff who will work with and be trained by the team leader and by temporary duty USGS staff. This activity is designed to establish a highly qualified cadre of personnel and to strengthen the MWI water infrastructure.

The project objective is to enhance current Jordanian technical capacities for hydrogeologic data and information development, management and analysis; development and use of ground-water management models; and joint design and conduct of outreach workshops and meetings to increase public understanding of the benefits of local efforts in groundwater management and conservation. Additional USGS staff will participate in the project on a temporary duty (TDY) basis serving as experts on groundwater modeling, water use, data systems, statistics, quality assurance, and groundwater field methods.

:
This project was requested by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and meets the USGS goal of supporting U.S. foreign policy. The project will support the Environmental and Natural Resource goal strategy to improve the quality and use of long-term datasets and interpretive products through testing in a foreign environment. The Jordan activity will contribute to USGS ability to describe and understand the Earth, which will have direct applicability to USGS domestic programs.
