The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institute of
Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and Office of Research on Women’s Health
(ORWH) are presenting the conference "The State-of-the-Art in the Management of Urinary
Tract Infections" on Tuesday, April 25, 2000, and Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at the
Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland.
This conference is a component of an educational initiative entitled "Emerging and
Reemerging Infectious Diseases." NIAID is committed to furthering scientific knowledge
regarding the etiology, epidemiology, assessment, and management of emerging and reemerging
infectious diseases. The series of conferences composing this initiative is designed to
provide healthcare professionals with the most current information on a number of infectious
diseases, including urinary tract infections.
This conference is designated for continuing medical education credit by the University of
Washington School of Medicine and is jointly sponsored by the University of Washington School
of Medicine and Gardiner-Caldwell SynerMed. The conference is made possible by an
unrestricted educational grant from Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical.

- Discuss the changing etiology and emerging pathogens associated with UTIs
- Outline the pathogenic mechanisms operative in UTIs
- Describe the consequences of increasing antimicrobial resistance on the management of UTIs
