The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) are presenting the conference "The State-of-the-Art in the Management of Urinary Tract Infections" on Tuesday, April 25, 2000, and Wednesday, April 26, 2000, at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda, Maryland.

This conference is a component of an educational initiative entitled "Emerging and Reemerging Infectious Diseases." NIAID is committed to furthering scientific knowledge regarding the etiology, epidemiology, assessment, and management of emerging and reemerging infectious diseases. The series of conferences composing this initiative is designed to provide healthcare professionals with the most current information on a number of infectious diseases, including urinary tract infections.

This conference is designated for continuing medical education credit by the University of Washington School of Medicine and is jointly sponsored by the University of Washington School of Medicine and Gardiner-Caldwell SynerMed. The conference is made possible by an unrestricted educational grant from Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical.

The educational objectives for the conference are as follows:

  • Delineate the epidemiology of UTIs
  • Discuss the changing etiology and emerging pathogens associated with UTIs
  • Outline the pathogenic mechanisms operative in UTIs
  • Describe the consequences of increasing antimicrobial resistance on the management of UTIs
  • Describe the risk factors that influence the development and recurrence of UTIs in at-risk patient populations
  • Discuss the role of conventional and evolving therapies in the prevention and management of UTIs

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged; onsite registration will be accommodated as space allows. There is no charge or registration fee to attend the conference. However, those participants who desire CME credit will be required to complete a form and return it to the University of Washington School of Medicine along with a check for $30.00. The forms will be available at the conference. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements, hotel accommodations, ground transportation, meals, etc. Light refreshments and beverages will be provided during several breaks in the conference.
