Introduction
Influenza is caused by a virus. It is notable in its ability to produce
annual epidemics of disease in both developed and developing countries.
Previous vaccination or prior infection does not guarantee protection
since the virus varies from year to year.
DMID supports research leading to more effective approaches to control
influenza virus infections. This includes:
- Basic research on virus structure and function, viral pathogenesis,
and the host response due to infection
- Epidemiologic studies on the natural history and ecology of zoonotic
influenza viruses
- Vaccine development and evaluation
- Improved vaccine delivery
- Drug discovery and evaluation
