Introduction
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a component
of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), is a leader in research on the
prevention and treatment of malaria. NIAID faces the challenges of malaria with
laboratory, field-based, and clinical research efforts within its own
laboratories on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD (Laboratory
of Parasitic Diseases); at institutions throughout the United States;
and in collaboration with foreign colleagues in sites such as Mali, Cameroon,
Ghana, Malawi, Thailand, Kenya, Indonesia, Brazil, and Papua New Guinea.

NIAID Research for Malaria Vaccine Development -
The proposed malaria vaccine plan aims to address current gaps in the areas of
clinical/field-based research on protective immunity and pathogenesis, as well
as the lack of infrastructure for preclinical development and clinical trials
of candidate vaccines. It also aims to strengthen our fundamental understanding
of the malaria parasite, and build on this understanding as well as on new
advances in immunology research to develop new or improved candidate vaccines.

Blue Ribbon Panel Report on Malaria Research Plan - In
1997 NIAID convened a panel of experts on tropical diseases and vaccine
development to review the malaria vaccine research plan. Click here to read the
report and the panel's recommendations.

Strengthening Research Capacity in Developing Countries
As with all diseases of worldwide importance, a critical aspect of our future
ability to control malaria will depend on the skills and expertise of
scientists, doctors and other health care workers, and public health
specialists working in endemic regions. Therefore, strengthening the research
capability of scientists in their own countries is an important focus of NIAID
efforts. NIAID researchers work closely with national and international
organizations involved in malaria research and control, and was a founding
member of the
Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM), which emphasizes
strengthening research capacity in Africa. Enhancing research capacity within
developing countries is an important component of programs within NIAID's
long-standing International Centers for Tropical
Disease Research (ICTDR) network.
