Activity: Stop the Cough! Immunizations Protect Little Lungs Media Campaign
With the goal of raising awareness about the importance of timely immunizations for infants and toddlers, the California Coalition for Childhood Immunization (C3I) is collaborating with California Immunization Coalitions and Health Departments to coordinate a state-wide "kick-off" event for NIIW and California's Toddler Immunization Month (May, 2003). The events (occurring on the same day at various sites throughout the state) are designed to draw attention to the vulnerability of un-immunized children when they are exposed to serious, yet vaccine-preventable illnesses that affect children's lungs such as Influenza ("Flu"), Pertussis ("Whooping Cough") and Pneumococcal Disease. Children have little lungs and need immunizations to protect them! On the designated NIIW "Child and Day Care Center Day", Pre-school aged children will wear specially designed "lung costumes" and showcase their healthy lungs by blowing kazoos, bubbles, and party horns. Some events will also feature children singing, and hosting a teddy bear immunization clinic.

KENTUCKY

Williamsburg, Kentucky
Activity: “Save Lives—Immunize”
This activity is targeted primarily at parents/caregivers, but includes the entire community. Healthy Start staff is doing a campaign during the entire month of April that includes newspaper ads and radio PSAs. But, the main focus is to have parents/caregivers present an up-to-date immunization certificate for each child in their home. These certificates can be shown to the home visitors or to medical providers. When proof is presented, the parents/caregivers' names are entered in a drawing for a basket of baby supplies and children's products that will be given away at the end of April. This has been very effective motivation to have a current immunization certificate for each child in the home. The parents/caregivers name is entered for each up-to-date certificate regardless of the number of children per household.
