The Health Consequences of Smoking on the Human Body

For the first time, the Office on Smoking and Health at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has developed an interactive, animated presentation about the effects of smoking on the human body based on findings of the 2004 Surgeon General’s Report. It is available in Flash (http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/sgr/sgr_2004/ sgranimation/flash/index.html) and HTML (http://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/sgr/sgr_2004/ sgranimation/welcome.html).

The animation demonstrates lungs breathing, a heart beating, an esophagus swallowing, eyes moving, and an infant moving in the womb. To see how smoking damages the body, compare photos of diseased organs beside healthy ones. The site offers tips on how to stop smoking and information on the health benefits of cessation.

The New Spectrum of Prevention: A Model for Public Health Practice

The Spectrum of Prevention is a framework for health departments and community agencies to conceptualize, implement, and coordinate a wide variety of public health programs. The framework is described in an article that appears on the following Web site: http://www.ccpublichealth.org*. The article outlines the seven strategies in the Spectrum of Prevention and explains why the Spectrum is appropriate for planning and coordinating programs that address complex community health issues. The broad range of activities encompassed by the Spectrum describes new roles for public health that suggest a broader definition of health and include approaches such as forming coalitions and networks, and, the newest strategy, mobilizing communities. Detailed examples demonstrate how one county public health department in California, Contra Costa Health Services, has used the Spectrum framework to improve community health.
