The GSA Heartland Region’s real estate inventory consists of numerous buildings that are important due to architectural and historical significance. The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 calls for Federal Agencies to identify, conserve and facilitate initiatives that foster the conservation and continued use of historic buildings both in the public and private sector.

Preserving the heritage of the nation’s historic properties for future generations is important to GSA in the Heartland.  Therefore, GSA provides technical and strategic expertise to promote the viability, reuse, and care of historic buildings GSA owns, leases, and has the opportunity to acquire.

The Heartland Region is home to many historic buildings, such as U.S. Courthouses in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Omaha, Nebraska, Kansas City, Missouri and Wichita, Kansas.  These buildings, many of which were constructed during the Depression era, are symbols of historical significance that the Heartland Region is dedicated to preserving.
