Challis Field Office Completes Cleanup of Ima Millsite Foundation and Removal of Heavy Metal Contamination

Heavy metal removal at Ima Mine Cleanup of the Ima Mine millsite foundation and removal of heavy metal contamination was recently completed by the BLM Challis Field Office.

The removal project went well, with 28 barrels of mixed heavy metal waste transported to a treatment storage disposal facility. The heavy metal waste, in the form of slag and ore, had remained for years next to a road used by campers, hunters and recreationists accessing a nearby Forest Service trailhead. Removal of the lead- and arsenic-bearing material was the initial step in restoration work proposed for the Ima Mine area.

Features of the abandoned tungsten mine straddle Patterson Creek, a bull trout stream and tributary of the Pahsimeroi River in east-central Idaho. To improve the stream’s bull trout habitat, mine tailings stabilization along Patterson Creek is proposed, as well as stabilization of a degraded large culvert site.

Closure of accessible mine adit portals is planned this fall in cooperation with the Sawtooth National Forest mine closure team. The remainder of the Ima Mine along Patterson Creek will be addressed in future stabilization efforts in the next 2 to 3 years.
