BRD Activities in New Jersey |
- The BRD provides funding support to the New Jersey Audubon Society to conduct surveys of migrating birds of prey
at Sandy Hook State Park and at the Cape May Bird Observatory. BRD scientists are working with the State Division
of Fish, Game, and Wildlife to develop a model monitoring program for New Jersey birds that breed in the tropics.
Results of the monitoring program will also be used by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in managing migratory birds
at Cape May National Wildlife Refuge.
- New Jersey has joined forces with Delaware and Maryland in a unique program that includes Federal and State
agencies and others involved in the Delaware Bay Estuary Project to develop a regioinal Gap Analysis Program. BRD
scientists provide the computer and biological expertise for the program, which is designed to identify plant and animal
distribution patterns within the context of land ownership and development.
- BRD scientists are evaluating the extent of dioxin contamination in the lower Passaic River and Newark Bay. Data
indicates these two areas are contaminated with many trace metals, pesticides, PCBs, and dioxins. BRD research will
provide information for natural resource managers on how to assess the toxic potential of sediments.
- New Jersey has begun an initiative to create a State-wide Biodiversity Program. BRD partnership and collaboration is
being sought to help conduct a biological inventory of the Pinelands/Mullica River Great Bay National Estuarine
Research Reserve.
- The New Jersey Coastal Plain is included in the National Water Quality Assessment Program, an effort by the U.S.
Geological Survey to assess the health of our Nation's water resources by following a standard procedure to sample
the water, sediment, and aquatic life in representative streams. The BRD provides expertise and technical assistance in
biological collections and interpretation of data.
- BRD research laboratories provide technical support to the pharmaceutical industry to help them gain FDA approval
for anesthetics and drugs important for control of fish diseases in State and private hatcheries .
