The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Theft Prevention Program establishes standards to reduce the number of motor vehicle thefts for passenger cars, light-duty trucks and multipurpose passenger vehicles. As a part of this provision, NHTSA selects which new-introduction motor vehicles are likely to be high-theft and annually calculates the theft rates for motor vehicles currently in production. Additionally, the Theft Prevention Program annually provides consumers with consolidated information from various insurance and rental/leasing companies on their theft-related activities, including their comprehensive rates and premiums for stolen motor vehicles.
