National Archives Participates in Arts on Foot Festival, Saturday, September
20
Washington, DC. . .As part of its celebration of the reopening of the Rotunda
for the Charters of Freedom, the National Archives will join in the festivities
of the Pennsylvania Quarter's 10th Annual Arts on Foot Festival on Saturday,
September 20, 2003. The festival runs between 11:00am and 5:00pm, and will feature
Washington, DC's visual and performing artists at multiple venues between 4th
and 14th Streets, Pennsylvania Avenue and L Street.
The National Archives will participate under the tent on F Street, NW between
7th and 8th Streets by bringing part of the new National Archives Experience
to visitors with its Patent Puzzler games that showcase fascinating patent records
from its holdings.
The National Archives will also host a Children's Book Fair and many other
family activities Saturday, September 20, at the National Archives Building
at 700 Constitution Avenue between 7th and 9th Streets, NW, as part of two weeks
of free public programs and family activities celebrating the reopening of the
Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom.

- 11 a.m. - Kathleen Karr signs her book, It Happened in the White House

author of The Boy Who Saved the Town
- 1 p.m. - Susan Roth, author of Nothing but Miracles, an illustrated
version of Miracles, the poem by Walt Whitman from his Leaves of Grass
Rosalyn Schanzer, author of How We Crossed the West: The Adventures of Lewis
and Clark and How Ben Franklin Stole the Lightning
- 2 p.m. - Laura Krauss Melmed, author of Capital! Washington DC from A to
Z Michelle Green, author of A Strong Right Arm: The Story of Mamie Peanut
Johnson
- 3 p.m. - Wendie Old, author of To Fly: The Story of the Wright Brothers
Mary Lyons, author of Catching the Fire: Philip Simmons, Blacksmith and
Talking With Tebe: Clementine Hunter, Memory Artist.
Other events that will be held at the National Archives Building on Saturday,
September 20 are as follows:
- 10 a.m. - midnight - Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom open for public
viewing.
- 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. - Hands-on learning activities and previews of the Public
Vaults. Activities include:
- Film Corner - Footage of 4th of July activities, NOVA footage
of re-encasement of Charters of Freedom; film from the National Institute
on Standards and Technology about the Charters.
- Ask the Expert Corner - Guest speakers from National Archives
staff and demonstrations from artisans. Topics covered include restoration
of Rotunda murals, preservation of documents, choosing exhibit items,
etc.
- Hands-on/Learning Center - Featuring the Patent Puzzler, Scavenger
Hunt and other activities.
- Present Meets the Past - Visit with
noteworthy historical characters from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.
- 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. Live performances, celebrating the musical holdings of
the National Archives, on the Constitution Avenue steps of the National Archives

- 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. Live performances, celebrating the musical holdings of the
National Archives, on the Constitution Avenue steps of the National Archives
Building
- 7 p.m. - 8 p.m.- Live performances, celebrating the musical holdings of
the National Archives, on the Constitution Avenue steps of the National Archives
Building
- 8:30 p.m. - 11:30 p.m. - Patriotic Sound and Light Show on Constitution
Avenue side of the National Archives Building.
