BLM to Give
Away Mustang at State Fair
PUEBLO,
Colo. – On Sept. 1, 2004, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will hold a
free drawing for a gentled eight-month-old colt at the Colorado State
Fair. They will also be adopting approximately 17 hand-picked mustangs
and three burros. There will be no charge for the drawing, however, the
winner must be present at the adoption to be eligible.
The drawing
and adoption will be held in the rodeo arena of the State Fair at 6 p.m.
Interested parties must be approved to adopt and agree to the terms of
adoption and may register the day of in the arena area from 4:30 to 5:30
p.m., or at the BLM Wild Horse and Burro booth, which will be set-up on
the south side of the grandstands along Main Street from 9 a.m. to 4:30
p.m.
The mustangs
and burros have been selectively gathered from public lands administered
by the BLM where the populations have exceeded the carrying capacity of
the land. This adoption will feature untrained mustangs and burros as
well as saddle and halter trained mustangs from the Wild Horse Inmate
Program in Canõn City. Mustangs trained at the Wild Horse Inmate Program
recently won all top honors at a working horse competition in Wyoming. A
preview of the mustangs and burros offered for adoption can be seen at
www.cijvp.com.
To qualify
to adopt a mustang or burro, adopters must be at least 18 years old. They
must have the ability and financial means to care for a mustang or burro,
and have corrals that meet BLM specifications. The minimum adoption fee
is $125 per animal, $925 for saddle trained mares, or $1,025 for saddle
trained geldings.
Mustangs and
burros are well known for their inherent traits of intelligence, loyalty,
stamina, sure-footedness, and soundness. Throughout the 33-year BLM
program, adopted mustangs and burros have found their way into the hearts
of thousands of recreational riders and show arenas in both Western and
English specialties, dressage competition, endurance rides as well as
ranch work.
All of these
animals are guaranteed healthy and will be ready for adopters to gentle
and train. They have been wormed, vaccinated (including West Nile), and
come with a complete set of health care records.
