Overview

About 80 percent of Americans live in urban areas. Among the public issues they deal with are health, community development, natural resources and the environment, and workforce development. CSREES works to increase awareness of the need for Cooperative Extension Service programs in urban areas and provides funding for them.

In Focus

• The Garden Mosaics Project provides an informal education model for community gardens in which youth, educators, and adult gardeners explore science principles.
• We Grow People--Profiles of Extension Educators is a research study of New York City urban extension educators and how they do their jobs.

Partnerships

• CSREES partners with the National Association of Conservation Districts' Urban, Community, and Coastal Resources Committee and other groups on urban issues.
• The National Association of Counties, CSREES, and the Land-Grant University System partner in a fellowship program.
• CSREES works with the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges' Commission on the Urban Agenda.

• Texas A&M; University's Urban Programs is a model for national urban programs.
• The University of Illinois Extension-Chicago Fresh Program Initiative encourages urban farming within the city of Chicago.

• Successful Gardner, North Carolina State University. Research-based horticultural information.
• Urban Programs, Texas A&M; University. Provides knowledge resources of the Land-Grant University System to educate Texans on urban issues.
