Research Project:
Agricultural by-Products As Adsorbents for Environmental Remediation
Location:
Commodity Utilization Research
Project Number: 6435-41000-084-00
Project Type:
Appropriated
Start Date: Jun 23, 2001
End Date: Feb 28, 2005
Objective:
Research will be conducted on the conversion of agricultural residues, which include plant by-products and animal biosolids, to value-added products to: 1) develop cost-effective processes to convert agricultural residues to value-added products; 2) to evaluate value-added products against comparable commercial products on a functional, economic and risk assessment basis; and 3) to develop an engineering, economic and outreach plan to utilize the value-added products in the marketplace.
Approach:
Low value, high volume agricultural waste will be converted to higher value products, intended for the commercial marketplace. The products will be used largely in environmental applications to improve air, water and soil quality and soil fertility. Cost-effective processes will be developed for each product and a series of assessments will be made on the feasibility of establishing product markets for future commercialization. A CRADA has been established with Amalgamated Technology Inc., St. Louis, MO that will emphasize the production of activated carbon from plant residues. Additionally, agreements are in place with two universities and a foreign company to further the research and development of plant by-products to activated carbons. Collaboration is anticipated with additional universities and conservation groups to develop value-added products from animal biosolids.
