France became the 107th country to join GLOBE in a ceremony held in conjunction with the 2004 International Astronautical Congress in Vancouver, Canada on 4 October 2004. Surface Temperature Field Campaign November 1-12, 2004: Help Study the Urban Heat Island Effect!
Dr. Kevin Czajkowski and researchers at the University of Toledo would like to announce a field campaign for GLOBE students to take surface temperature observations. We need as many surface temperature observations as possible during the intensive period November 1-12, 2004. In order to participate, a GLOBE-trained school must have an infrared (non-contact) thermometer that meets GLOBE specifications (see bottom of this announcement) and follow the directions given in the Surface Temperature Protocol. World Wide Web Resources on Tropical Cyclones
This year's tropical cyclone season is a stern reminder to all of us that tropical cyclones pose an extreme danger to life and property. Helplessly, we had to watch pictures in the news of severe flooding in India, in Bangladesh, in China, in Japan, in the Caribbean, in the United States and in many other places. Lives were not only lost due to flooding but also due to homes collapsing, trees falling, and objects flying through the air.
