NSF and Arizona

  • In FY 2003, NSF provided 470 awards totaling approximately $147 million to 26 institutions in the State of Arizona as well as $356,000 in fellowships.

  • Institutions in Arizona that received awards in FY 2003 include the Mesa Community College, Din้ College, the Gilbert Unified School District, Northern Arizona University, HOBI Labs Inc., and NanoTek, Inc.

Examples of Projects Currently Funded by NSF in the State of Arizona

  • Sustainability of Water Resources in Semi-Arid Regions — The continuing availability of adequate water depends critically on our ability to manage water resource systems under a variable and uncertain climate. The current system lacks an effective mechanism for rapidly moving the state of scientific knowledge into widespread use. The Sustainability of Semi-Arid Hydrology and Riparian Areas Science and Technology Center at the University of Arizona focuses innovative research on the spatial and temporal properties of hydrologic variables, processes controlling water and chemical balances in catchments, functioning of riparian systems, integrated modeling of catchment-scale processes, and promoting researcher-user partnerships across the breadth of water resources management through technology transfer.

  • Work-Ready Electronics — An NSF Advanced Technological Education project at Maricopa County Community College, Work-Ready Electronics addresses the challenge of keeping the curriculum used in two-year electronics programs current with the rapidly changing nature of the industry. A permanent industry and education working group monitors and advises the project. Under its guidance, the project develops, pilot tests, and disseminates educational modules for a new electronic library of classroom-ready materials for teaching electronics technology. The project is currently developing 25 modules, field-testing them with at least 100 students in three locations. The intended users of the modules are faculty who teach in approximately 1,000 two-year degree programs.

  • Small Business Innovation Research — An NSF SBIR award to Split Engineering LLC supports development of two innovative technologies for characterizing fractures in rock masses. The first involves image-processing algorithms for the extraction of 3D fracture properties from fracture traces in digital images. The second involves the use of laser scanners to extract 3D properties of exposed fracture surfaces. The two technologies complement each other will and there are situations where the characterization of fracturing is best analyzed with one or the other or both technologies. The project will thoroughly evaluate the sources of error in both technologies through synthetic and field studies and develop a set of recommended field procedures and equipment for various applications to optimize the techniques and minimize errors.

  • Integrative Graduate Education and Research Training in Urban Ecology — An NSF IGERT award supports the establishment of a multidisciplinary graduate training program of education and research in urban ecology at Arizona State University. IGERT fellows may earn degrees in six core departments in the life, earth, and social sciences and will participate in team research, courses and seminars that emphasize integration among disciplines. Dissertations will be integrative and multidisciplinary and will include a substantial collaborative component beyond the student's home discipline. The main objective of the program is to educate a new kind of scientist who is broader, more flexible, more collaborative, and more adept at linking science and social issues than heretofore.
