NSF and Kentucky
In FY 2003, the NSF provided 126 awards totaling approximately $24 million to 16 institutions in the State of Kentucky.
Institutions in Kentucky receiving awards in FY 2003 included, Eastern Kentucky University, LevTech, Fayette County Public Schools, Murray State University, and Thomas Moore College.
Projects Currently Funded by NSF in
the State of Kentucky include:
- A Real Time Monitoring System for Spinal Fusion Surgery — The objective of this research at the University of Louisville is the development of an implantable strain sensor and appropriate measurement system to monitor real time spinal fusion rod strain. As the spine fuses, the load is transferred from the rod to the spine. The load transfer for a normal spinal fusion should be gradual and steady, and any deviation or discontinuity would indicate either non-fusion or possible failure of the rod or pedicle screw. A complete measurement system including microstrain sensors, signal conditioning, battery-free telemetry, sensor housing, and an external receiver will be developed. Two integrated circuits, a MOSFET switch and a LC antenna tank circuit placed on a multi-chip module board will provide strain sensor signal conditioning and telemetry transmission.
- Small Business Innovation Research — An NSF SBIR award to Lumenware LLC addresses the challenge of seamless interoperability among computer systems and user interface components such as displays and keyboards. Today these components are tightly coupled with the computer, which restricts the utility of both. The project goal is to develop and specify robust, efficient, and secure interfaces that enable computers to dynamically discover, connect to and use displays over moderate bandwidth network connections. The interface will make it possible for multiple computers to share a projection display serially via software.
- Kentucky Information Technology Center — The Kentucky Information Technology Center (KIT Center), a regional information technology center, is a consortium of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System and Lexington Community College. Supported by an NSF Advanced Technological Education award, the KIT Center enables two-year colleges to prepare skilled IT workers needed by new and existing Kentucky companies. The goals of the Center are to increase the IT enrollment and completion rates of students in two-year colleges; to implement widely and industry driven IT curriculum; to provide professional development for high school and two-year college IT faculty; and to increase the support and participation of business, government, and industry in Kentucky for IT education. A physical center provides the education for faculty and staff and for business, government, and industry workers. A virtual center provides information on the IT curriculum, offers IT courses, and supports workshops. Mobile centers provide workshops for instructors and/or
workers at their locations.
