SERIES NOTE

Current Bibliographies in Medicine (CBM) is a continuation in part of
the National Library of Medicine's Literature Search Series, which
ceased in 1987 with No. 87-15. In 1989 it also subsumed the
Specialized Bibliography Series. Each bibliography in the new series
covers a distinct subject area of biomedicine and is intended to fulfill a
current awareness function. Citations are usually derived from
searching a variety of online databases. NLM databases utilized include
MEDLINE, AVLINE, BIOETHICSLINE, CANCERLIT,
CATLINE, HEALTH, POPLINE and TOXLINE. The only
criterion for the inclusion of a particular published work is its relevance
to the topic being presented; the format, ownership, or location of the
material is not considered.

AUDIOVISUALS IN DERMATOLOGY

Dermatology briefly defined is the medical specialty concerned with the
diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, including the
relationship of the skin to systemic diseases. Because the pathology of
the skin is directly visible, dermatology is a specialty which is most
dependent on a physical diagnosis. Skin diseases show characteristic
patterns, locations, and morphologies which provide clues to
experienced physicians in making diagnoses. Because the visual aspect
is so important in dermatology, audiovisual media are the perfect tool
to provide extensive exposure of dermatologic conditions.

This bibliography was developed as an outgrowth of a collection
assessment project in dermatology which the National Library of
Medicine (NLM) undertook in 1990. NLM used existing bibliographic
compilations in dermatology and other assessment techniques to
evaluate its literature holdings, but no comparable bibliographic tools
could be identified to assess the NLM audiovisual collection.

The purpose of this publication is to provide a comprehensive
bibliography of commercially available audiovisual programs in
dermatology. Two bibliographic databases were searched in its
compilation: NLM's AVLINE database and the RLIN database of the
Research Libraries Information Group. Productions entered in these
databases through September 1992 are included. Also included are
citations to individual issues of the serials Video Journal of
Dermatology (Spring 1986 through Spring 1992) and Dialogues in
Dermatology (October 1991 through April 1992). The earlier issues of
the Dialogues... are cited in the Dialogues in Dermatology
Fourteen-Year Cumulative Index, September 1977 to September 1991,
available from the publisher of the series. Although the search for
dermatology audiovisuals was not restricted by language, all of the
references are in English.

Arrangement of this bibliography is by subject, primarily by disease
state; a citation may appear under more than one subject. Most of the
material selected for it was produced for professional application or
education; however, some health education material, which could be
used for patient education, was included. Material on the subject of
plastic surgery was deliberately excluded. Many older items listed may
not be available from the publishers indicated, but may be found in
existing library or departmental collections.

The compiler wishes to thank Dr. Charles Schneiderman of the
Educational Technology Branch, Lister Hill National Center for
Biomedical Communication, for his assistance as subject advisor for
this publication.

SEARCH STRATEGY

NLM's AVLINE was one of the sources searched in preparing this
bibliography in the CBM series. To assist you in updating or otherwise
manipulating the material in this publication, the strategy used for the
AVLINE database is given below. Please note that this search was
broadly formulated and irrelevant citations edited out prior to printing.

SS 1 = EXP SKIN DISEASES OR EXP SKIN

SS 2 = ALL DERMA: OR ALL CUTANE:

SS 3 = EXP ECTOPARASITIC INFESTATIONS OR EXP LEISHMANIASIS

SS 4 = EXP LEPROSY OR ALL SYPHIL: OR ALL LUPUS (MHF)

SS 5 = WOUND HEALING OR RASH (TW) OR RASHES (TW)

SS 6 = (CA) ALL WR:

SS 7 = 1 OR 2 OR 3 OR 4 OR 5 OR 6

GRATEFUL MED

To make online searching easier and more efficient, the Library offers
GRATEFUL MED, microcomputer-based software that provides a
user-friendly interface to most NLM databases. This software was
specifically developed for health professionals and features multiple
choice menus and "fill in the blank" screens for easy search preparation.
GRATEFUL MED runs on an IBM PC (or IBM-compatible) with
DOS 2.0 or a Macintosh, and requires a Hayes (or Hayes-compatible)
modem. It may be purchased from the National Technical Information
Service in Springfield, Virginia, for $29.95 (plus $3.00 per order for
shipping). For your convenience, an order blank has been enclosed at
the back of this bibliography.
