Series Note

Current Bibliographies in Medicine (CBM) is a continuation in part of the National Library of Medicine's Literature Search Series, which ceased in 1987 with No. 87-15. In 1989 it also subsumed the Specialized Bibliography Series. Each bibliography in the new series covers a distinct subject area of biomedicine and is intended to fulfill a current awareness function. Citations are usually derived from searching a variety of online databases. Citations are usually derived from searching a variety of online databases. NLM databases utilized include MEDLINE®, AVLINE®, BIOETHICSLINE®, CANCERLIT®, CATLINE®, HEALTHSTARtm, POPLINEtm and TOXLINE®. The only criterion for the inclusion of a particular published work is its relevance to the topic being presented; the format, ownership, or location of the material is not considered.

Introduction

BREAST CANCER SCREENING IN WOMEN AGES 40-49

A number of randomized clinical trials have shown clearly that early detection of breast cancer by mammography, with and without clinical breast examination at regular intervals ranging from 1 year to 33 months, reduces breast cancer mortality in women ages 50-69 by about a third. However, the picture is not as clear for women 40-49 years of age, and, worldwide, experts continue to examine the data regarding the use of mammography in this age group.

This bibliography was prepared in support of the National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference on Breast Cancer Screening in Women Ages 40-49 held in Bethesda, MD January 21-23, 1997. The conference addressed these key questions:

Is there a reduction in mortality from breast cancer due to screening women ages 40 to 49 with mammography, with or without physical examination? If so, how large is the benefit? How does it change with age?

What are the risks associated with screening women ages 40-49 with mammography and with physical examination?

Are there other benefits? If so, what are they? How do they change with age?

What is known about how the benefits and risks of breast cancer screening differ based on known risk factors for breast cancer?

What are the directions for future research?

This bibliography primarily includes journal articles from 1985 to 1996, with a few key articles from 1969 to 1984 and a few monographic references. Items were chosen for inclusion based on the following criteria: (1) they directly relate to the questions being addressed by the Conference; (2) they report the results of original research rather than speculation or commentary on the work of others; and (3) they report morbidity and mortality statistics and projections. Most letters and editorials have been excluded.

The bibliography is organized into five major sections: Randomized Controlled Trials of Breast Cancer Screening; Incidence and Mortality of Breast Cancer; Technology for Breast Cancer Screening; Risks and Benefits of Breast Cancer Screening; and Supplemental References containing the journal articles published prior to 1985, monographic references, and other references selected by the Conference speakers. A citation may appear in more than one category. All citations are in English.

The compilers wish to thank Dr. Barnett Kramer, Jay McNeave, and Lori Klein for their assistance in selection and classifying references and in editing and production of the bibliography.
