Scientists Exploring New Catheter-Based Treatment for Heart Disease

A catheter system that delivers therapy directly to a blocked artery may someday change our treatment of atherosclerosis and its complications.

FDA scientists, together with colleagues throughout the world, are conducting animal studies on a catheter system that carries a tiny syringe to a blocked artery. At the blockage site, the syringe injects drugs or other treatments directly into or around the artery wall.

In clinical practice, this system could allow doctors to direct their treatment to the exact location of a blockage. Furthermore, this could allow doctors to evaluate each patient’s condition and deliver the most appropriate drug and dose, thus reducing complications and increasing treatment effectiveness.
