GARDEN GROVE, Calif.; May 22, 2004 - Today, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez announced that Brittany Arnold, 18, of Marie L. Hare High School in Garden Grove, Calif., as the 1st place winner of Sanchez's 8th Annual "An Artistic Discovery" art competition. Arnold’s winning piece was a positive-negative zerography collage of roses.
As first-place winner, Arnold's artwork will be hung in the Cannon Tunnel, a walkway used by Members of Congress to get to the U.S. Capitol. She will receive a $3000 scholarship from the Savannah College of Art and Design and four round-trip tickets (courtesy of Southwest Airlines) to Washington, D.C., where she will attend the national awards ceremony at the Capitol.
"The best part about this competition is that not only am I lucky enough to meet great artistic talent from my district, I get to pass by the actual artwork every time I go to vote," said Rep. Sanchez. "Every time I walk through the tunnels on my way to the Capitol, I'm reminded of my constituents and those for whom I am about to cast a vote. It's a very powerful thing."
Arnold accepted her award alongside her grandmother Milly Arnold, art teacher Gloria Wargo and school counselorJackie Skahill. Arnold’s art teacher described her as a very driven self starter. "This award is very well deserved. Brittany is one of my top art students. She is like a sponge when it comes to learning," said Wargo.
