Rep. Loretta Sanchez Attends
Mammogram Examination Day at Nhan Hoa Clinic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez visited Nhan Hoa Comprehensive Health Care Clinic, where she met more than 50 patients and staff during the clinic’s Mammogram Examination Day, which aims to increase access to healthcare for low-income women.

“Many of the people in my district are part of the growing group of uninsured Americans.  Efforts like that of the Nhan Hoa Clinic to provide low-cost or free preventive care services, minor surgery, and health education classes, help improve access to health care for underserved populations,” said Sanchez.

On Mammogram Examination Day, Nhan Hoa Clinic spends the day providing free exams and education to those primarily living in the local Vietnamese community. Previous studies show that Vietnamese women underutilize breast cancer screening. They are both less likely to report ever having had clinical breast examinations (CBE) and mammography, and are more frequently overdue for these procedures than women in the general U.S. population.

“I thank Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez for visiting us and working hard to improve access to healthcare for Vietnamese Americans.  Most of our patients are Vietnamese Americans, and come from the cities of Westminster, Garden Grove, and Santa Ana.   Congresswoman Sanchez is the first elected official to visit our clinic,” said Tricia Nguyen, executive director of Nhan Hoa Clinic.

Nhan Hoa Clinic was founded in 1992 by a group of concerned medical professionals.  The clinic currently serves about 8,000 patients per year, 98.5 percent of which are 200 percent below the federal poverty level.

Sanchez has spent much of her Congressional career working on lowering the cost of healthcare, and in particular, increasing funding for research related to breast and cervical cancer. There are currently more that 40 million Americans without health insurance.
