Volunteers in the Presidential Libraries
Presidential Libraries are repositories for the papers, records and historical materials of Presidents Herbert Hoover to George Bush. The Presidential libraries work to ensure that these irreplaceable items are preserved and
made available for the widest possible use by researchers. Each library contains a Presidential museum and offers public programs to give the general public a better understanding of the individual Presidents, the institution of the Presidency, and the American political system.
Volunteers at the Presidential libraries serve a variety of functions. Museum docents provide museum tours and visitor assistance to over 1 million visitors each year. Volunteers also work with library holdings, including textual records, audiovisual ma
terials, oral history transcripts, and museum artifacts, by assisting with archival and curatorial projects. By answering telephones and preparing general information and educational mailings, volunteers provide invaluable support to the library staff an
d allow the libraries to serve the public in a more timely and courteous manner.
Because of their unique mission and nationwide locations, Presidential libraries serve as cultural and educational centers in communities throughout the country. Library volunteers work in educational outreach programs, traveling to schools and nursing h
omes to present historical dramas, educational workshops and informational slide shows. Their service has allowed the libraries to expand their outreach programs and better serve the public, both at the libraries and throughout their communities.
The specific requirements for Presidential library volunteers vary site to site. Persons interested in volunteer opportunities at one of the Presidential libraries should contact the facility directly.
