China's Grain Export Surge
After a mid 1990's setback, China's corn exports have rebounded, leading to a solid export position for all grains (corn, wheat, rice) for the fourth consecutive year. Corn exports in 1999/2000 are projected at 5 million tons, while wheat imports are forecast at 1.5 million tons, the second lowest level in the 1990's. Calendar year 2000 Rice exports are expected to remain strong, forecast just over 2 million tons.
The last four years stand in stark contrast to the early 1990's when wheat imports averaged 9 million per year. China's wheat imports have been limited in recent years due to production gains and stagnant domestic use.
