Mid-Atlantic States - 1999 Drought

The Foreign Agricultural Service's Production Estimates and Crop Assessment Division (PECAD) used satellite imagery and satellite derived Vegetative Index Numbers to help determine the effects of the 1999 Drought on the Mid-Atlantic States. Following is: 1) a NOAA-14 Satellite Image of this region from early August 1999, 2) a Vegetative Index Map derived from data from late July and early August 1999, and 3) a Vegetative Index Comparison Map, comparing "greenness" from late July and early August 1999 to the same date range in 1998.

For more information on the remote sensing terms used for analyses by PECAD the following file is provided.

The graphics and analyses were performed by Brian Bossak and Carl Gernazio. For more information contact Carl Gernazio, Crop Assessment Specialist at 202-690-0136 or by e-mail at gernazio@fas.usda.gov.
