NSF Speakers to Address Trust, Communication, Language,
and Learning at AAAS Meeting
This year's annual meeting of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Boston will
feature several National Science Foundation (NSF)
speakers and organizers. The meeting will be held
from February 14-19 at the Hynes Convention Center,
the Sheraton Boston Hotel, and the Boston Marriott-Copley
Place. Topics and speakers include:
Science and Public Trust
NSF program officer Rachelle Hollander will lead a
session on "The Politics of Human Participants for
the Social and Behavioral Sciences." She will be joined
by NSF program officers Stuart Plattner, who will
discuss "Meeting Requirements for Human Participation:
How NSF Responds," and Joan Sieber, who will discuss
"Doing Ethically Responsible Research-A View from
the Trenches." (Feb. 18, 11 a.m.-noon)
NSF program officer Hyman Field will discuss "Why the
Public Needs to Understand the Process of Research"
at a symposium "What Message is Science Sending-and
How?" (Feb.17, 3 p.m.-6 p.m.)
Communicating Across Boundaries
Hyman Field will also speak at a session on "Best Practices
from Research Scientists Who Communicate with the
Public." (Feb. 17, 9 a.m-noon)
Brain, Mind and Behavior
NSF division director Philip Rubin has organized a
session on "Speaking, Signing, Reading: Brain Systems
that Support Language Use" to present research on
neural mechanisms, the flexibility of language systems,
and neuroimaging of reading. (Feb. 18, 9 a.m. to
noon)
Teaching, Learning, and Careers
NSF program officer Maria Ruiz Primo will discuss current
research on assessment, related to a national report
that suggested the creation of a system of education
from preschool through college, at a session on "Seamless
K-16 Science Education." (Feb. 16, 3 p.m.-6 p.m.)
NSF program officer George Rubottom will present "A
Survey of External Funding of Research at Predominately
Undergraduate Institutions" at a session on "Academic
Excellence; The Role of Undergraduate Participation
in Research." (Feb. 18, 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.)
Science and Sustainability
NSF's Rachelle Hollander has organized a session on
"The Search for a Common Future: Communicating about
Global Sustainability" that will include talks on
politics, global change, and economics. (Feb. 15,
4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.)
NSF division director Pierre Perrolle will discuss
"Scientific Capacity-Building through International
Cooperation" at a "Science and Technology in International
Development." (Feb. 17, 3p.m. - 6 p.m.)
