• Maryland Businessman Sentenced for Illegally Marketing Aloe Vera Compounds as AIDS and Cancer Treatments (December 5)
• FDA Alerts Southern Florida Patients to Possibly Inadequate Prostate Cancer Treatments (November 27) The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting certain prostate cancer patients in South Florida to the possibility that they may have been given inadequate levels of the anti-cancer drug Lupron. This alert applies only to prostate cancer patients who have been treated at Urology P.A. -- operated by Dr. Victor Souaid at 2100 East Sample Road, Pompano Beach, Florida.
• Xeloda (capecitabine) from Roche and Taxotere (docetaxel) from Aventis, Inc. received approval on September 10, 2001 for treating patients with metastatic breast cancer whose cancer has progressed after treatment with an anthracycline-containing cancer therapy (such as Adriamycin and doxorubicin).
• Given Diagnostic Imaging System, from Given Imaging Ltd, received approval on August 1, 2001, is a swallowable capsule containing a tiny camera that snaps pictures twice a second as it moves through the small intestine.  It is intended to  visualize the inside of the small intestine to detect polyps, cancer or causes of bleeding and anemia.
• New Joint Program Announced by FDA and NCI Holds Promise for Cancer Treatment (July 20) The new program, called the Clinical Proteomics Program, melds the study of all proteins in living cells (or proteomics) to the clinical care of patients, the first time this new research technology has been applied directly to patient care.
• Operation Cure All Battle Internet Health Fraud,  FDA has joined with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and others in a program aimed at stopping Internet scams that promote dietary supplements, devices, and other products as cures or treatments for cancer and other life-threatening diseases. (June 14)
• FDA Approves Gleevec for Leukemia Treatment (May 10)
• FDA Approves Femara as First-Line Therapy for Advanced Breast Cancer (January 10)
