President Bush Appoints Edson as Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs and Deputy National Security Advisor

The President announced today the appointment of Gary R. Edson to the newly-created position of Deputy Assistant to the President for International Economic Affairs and Deputy National Security Advisor.

In that role, Edson will serve as a deputy to both Larry Lindsey, the Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and Condoleeza Rice, the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs.  He will be responsible for coordinating and integrating international economic policy with national security and foreign policy.  He will also be the “sherpa,” or lead U.S. coordinator, for the annual G-8 summits.

Edson, who was Deputy Policy Director of the Bush-Cheney Transition, served as Chief of Staff and General Counsel to the U.S. Trade Representative Carla A. Hills, in the Bush Administration, and as Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State, Kenneth W. Dam, in the Reagan Administration. Edson graduated with honors from Stanford University with a B.A. in anthropology, and he received his J.D. and M.B.A. degrees from the University of Chicago.
