President Signs Recess Appointment
President Bush Signed the Recess Appointment of John Magaw to be Under Secretary of Transportation Security

President George W. Bush today signed the recess appointment of John Magaw to be Under Secretary of Transportation for Security.   The President announced the intention to nominate Mr. Magaw on December 10, 2001, and his nomination was transmitted to the Senate on December 13, 2001.

Mr. Magaw is the former Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and former Director of the U.S. Secret Service.  He is presently the Acting Executive Director of the Office of National Preparedness within the Federal Emergency Management Agency.  Mr. Magaw joined FEMA in December 1999, as the Senior Advisor to the Director for terrorism preparedness and has also served as Acting Director and Acting Deputy Director.

Mr. Magaw directed the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms from 1993 to 1999, and served in the Secret Service for 26 years.  Before being named Director of the Secret Service, Magaw oversaw all protective operations for the President and first family among other positions including deputy special agent in charge of the Vice Presidential division and head of the Washington Field Office.  Magaw earned the Presidential Rank Meritorious Award in 1991 and 1999, and the Presidential Rank Distinguished Award in 1995.  A native of Columbus, Ohio, Magaw began his law enforcement career as a trooper with the Ohio State Patrol in 1959 and holds a bachelor's degree from Otterbein College.
