Nomination
President Bush to Nominate Miles to be Ambassador of the United States to the Republic of Georgia
President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate
Richard Monroe Miles to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of the United States of America to the Republic of
Georgia. A career member of the Senior Foreign Service, he
has been Chief of Mission in Sofia, Bulgaria since
1999. From 1996 to 1999, Miles was Ambassador in Belgrade,
and from 1993 to 1996, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in
Moscow. His previous overseas assignments include service as
Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Principal Officer in Berlin and Consul
General in Leningrad. His assignments at the Department of
State include service in the Office of Regional Military Affairs in the
Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, in the Office of Eastern European
and Yugoslav Affairs, and in the Office of Soviet Union
Affairs. Ambassador Miles has received numerous awards for
his service including the National Human Intelligence Collection
Award. Miles earned a B.A. from the University of California
at Berkley and a M.A. from Indiana University.
