The Climate Prediction Center forecasts trends for winter. Terms to know... Winter Storm Watch - the potential for heavy snow of 6 inches or greater, significant freezing rain, or blizzard conditions in the 12 to 48 hour period. The track of the winter storm is still uncertain. Winter Storm Warning - heavy snow of 6 inches or greater, significant freezing rain, or blizzard conditions are imminent or highly probable. Usually issued 6 to 12 hours in advance of a winter storm. Snow Advisory - 3 to 5 inches of snow is expected in a specified period (12 hours or less). Blizzard Warning - winds or gusts to 35 miles an hour or greater combined with falling and/or blowing snow which frequently reduces visibility to less than 1/4 of a mile for 3 hours or more. Blowing Snow Advisory - blowing snow is expected to reduce visibilities intermittently to less than 1/2 of a mile in a specified period (12 hours or less). Wind Chill Advisory - wind chills are expected to range from 20 below to 35 below in a specified period (12 hours or less). Wind Chill Warning - life-threatening wind chills of 35 below or lower are expected in a specified period (12 hours or less). |
