Electronic and Special Media Records Services Division

The origin of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) custodial
program for electronic records dates from 1968. NARA's contemporary efforts
to ensure ready access to essential evidence in electronic form reside within
the Electronic and Special Media Records Services Division of the Modern Records
Program. The Division accessions, preserves and provides access to U.S. Federal
Government electronic records of continuing value. By these activities, NARA
enables researchers
to gain access to federal records designed for computer processing that Federal
agencies have transferred to archival custody. The holdings are as diverse as
the activities and interests of the Federal Government and number close to 200,000
unique files.
There are two basic access modes for NARA's accessioned electronic records.
- The traditional mode is that the researchers can acquire copies of electronic
records file(s) of interest to them, on a cost-recovery basis, on removable
media. The options related to this access mode are described in the handout,
Ordering Information for Electronic Records.
