    Details...

The U.S. is the largest, most sophisticated producer of refined petroleum products in the world. Every person in the U.S. consumes on average 20 pounds of petroleum per day. Oil provides about 40 percent of the energy Americans consume and 97 percent of our transportation fuels. Petroleum refining has grown increasingly complex. Research and development programs that improve productivity and energy efficiency are key to maintaining the viability of the US petroleum refining industry.

Through participation in OIT's Industries of the Future process, the U.S. petroleum industry has

  • Set a vision for the future
  • Clearly defined its R&D priorities in roadmaps
  • Developed a portfolio of innovative R&D
  • Tapped into expanded tools and resources
  • Accelerated progress toward major technology breakthroughs

Solicitations

Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) awards cost-shared funding for R&D projects through a competitive solicitation process. Projects are performed by collaborative partnerships and must address industry-specified priorities. In this way, ITP maintains a balanced portfolio of R&D projects that will help realize national goals for energy and the environment.
