Making The Case for a Global HuGE Initiative

Muin Khoury makes a case for advancing the human genome epidemiology initiative onto the global stage. In a recently published letter in Nature Genetics , he argued that “…what is urgently needed is a coordinated global initiative to standardize and integrate data from the many ‘cohort’ studies currently conducted around the world; develop and apply systematic methods for integrating results obtained from all types of epidemiologic studies and biologic data; and develop and implement an evidence-based process that uses epidemiologic data for conducting clinical trials and assessing the value of genomic information in improving health and preventing disease…”

New Database Focused on Epidemiology of DNA Repair Polymorphisms

HuGENet™ member Paolo Vineis from the Imperial College London has launched a searchable database focused on DNA repair and the risk for cancer (http://perseus.isi.it/huge). Designed for geneticists and epidemiologists, the DNA Repair Polymorphisms site database allows users to compare study designs and results from selected HuGE research articles dating back to 1996.

  • 29 HuGE Reviews. In the month of September, the most popular review was “ 5,10-Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) Gene Variants and Congenital Anomalies,“ with 1,687 page visits.
  • 13 HuGE Fact Sheets. In the previous month, the most popular Fact Sheet was “ FMR1 and the Fragile X Syndrome,“ with 688 page visits
  • 53 e-Journal Club entries
  • 4 HuGE Case Studies
  • 12,911 articles indexed in the HuGE Published Literature database, referencing 1,599 genes, 520 factors (personal or environmental), and 1,732 health outcomes/diseases.
  • 13 genes found in the Genotype Prevalence Database.  In the month of September the database received 68 page visits

Note: The term “page visits”, as referenced above, describes how many times the page was viewed by one or more users. All reported figures of page visits are based on users from outside of the CDC domain.
