A toolkit developed through the collaboration of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials designed to assist public health agency staffs with their efforts to integrate genomics into public health practice. The toolkit provides strategies to assist in developing committees and meetings, conducting a needs assessment and establishing priorities in the context of genomics and public health.

This periodic report presents a timely and practical collection of vignettes of the status of genomics and population health in the United States, and is intended for health professionals who are interested in integrating genomics into health promotion, disease prevention, and health care. With regard to resources and tools for public health professionals, Chapter 11, Hemochromatosis: Information and Resources for Health Care Providers, describes the disorder and offers information on a CDC training course on Hemochromatosis. Genomics Training for Public Health Practice: The Michigan Experience, Chapter 12, provides an overview of public health workforce needs for genomics training, and presents lessons learned in Michigan. Chapter 13, Genomics Tools for Public Health, describes genomic tools and its relation to public health practice. Internet Resources for Genomics and Disease Prevention, Chapter 15, offers internet resources that may be useful to national, state, and local public health professionals interested in learning about genomics and public health.
