New NATO Chief to Visit the United States

NATO has announced that the alliance's new secretary general, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, will visit the United States January 29-30, meeting in Washington with President Bush and other top government officials.

NATO SECRETARY GENERAL TO VISIT THE UNITED STATES

The Secretary General of NATO, Mr. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, will make his first visit to the United States on Thursday 29 January and Friday 30 January 2004.

On Thursday 29 January he will give a key-note speech at the National Defence University in Washington, DC.

During his visit to Washington, the Secretary General will meet President Bush, with Vice President Cheney, with Secretary of State Powell, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, and National Security Advisor Rice.

In addition, Mr. de Hoop Scheffer will meet members of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee and other government officials. He will attend a dinner hosted by the Atlantic Council of the United States.
