overview
U.S. trade data is collected by the Customs Service of the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security and compiled and distributed by
the Census Bureau of the U.S. Department of Commerce using the United
States' Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) of 10-digit codes. Data
cover U.S. exports and imports by country, commodity, and Customs
District; quantity and value; monthly and annually for all countries
trading with the United States. (For 1989 forward, data by Customs
District for HTS codes are available from the U.S.
International Trade Commission.)
Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United States (FATUS) is a standard
USDA aggregation of several thousand HTS codes into 213 agricultural
groups most used by the public. USDA Foreign Agricultural Service's
(FAS) U.S. Trade Internet System
contains information on the country
composition of FATUS regions and the HTS content of FATUS commodity
groups for exports
and imports.
(Note: see the U.S. Trade Internet System
home page for July 2004 changes to the FATUS country and commodity
groups.)

data files
Current U.S. agricultural trade data from 1989 forward—updated
monthly, including both FATUS and HTS codes, are available from
FAS. Choose FATUS imports
or FATUS exports.
Prior to 1999, these data are not precisely identical to former
printed FATUS publications due to data updates, but discrepancies
are relatively minor. Click
here for directions on how to use FAS' U.S. Trade Internet System.
Historical FATUS data 1976-88 are available electronically
from ERS by special request. These data are by FATUS groupings only;
data by HTS code are not available. Indicate your needs: 1) exports,
imports, or both; 2) quantity, value, or both; 3) monthly, calendar
year, or by fiscal year data; 4) total U.S. trade only or by country
of destination/source; and 5) the years and countries you desire.
Please limit data requests to a reasonable size.
Historical FATUS data prior to 1976 are available
only in USDA's printed Foreign Agricultural Trade of the United
States publications found in many libraries back to 1926.
Historical HTS data for 1966-88 are available by
calling FAS
commodity analysts.
