  food & nutrition assistance programs

USDA administers numerous domestic food assistance programs that serve about one in five Americans at some point during the year. The programs work individually and in concert to provide a nutrition safety net for children and low-income adults and are a major component of the Federal safety net. Together, these programs account for about half of total USDA outlays. ERS conducts and funds research and evaluations of these programs—such as the Food Stamp Program, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), and child nutrition programs—focusing on the benefits of improved diets and food choices, factors that influence diet and nutrition, and program outcomes.
